Rock Climbing and Canoeing in Central Portugal with Rock and River Print E-mail
Holiday Focus Portugal

For the outdoor enthusiast Central Portugal presents vast opportunities to explore a rich and varied landscape. Unlike many European destinations, Portugal is as yet unhindered by access issues, offering unlimited areas of natural beauty.

For a climber and paddler there are endless crags to scale and waterways to explore. The river Mondego begins as a spring in the Serra da Estrella and winds its way to figeira da Foz , via Coimbra to the Atlantic. It has been dammed and offers a current less deep water way along pine and eucalyptus forests.

Casa do Brasáo, A great walk in Marvão, Alto Alentejo, Portugal Print E-mail
Holiday Focus Portugal

'Casa do Brasão', The Coat of Arms Cottage, originally built in 1856, is a fully restored and stylishly decorated cottage situated in Marvão and the natural park of 'Serra de São Mamede', an area of outstanding natural beauty. Dewi Jones who runs Casa do Brasáo sent Wildside Holidays some details of a nearby walk.

A great walk in Marvão, Alto Alentejo, Portugal with fantastic panoramic views, wonderful countryside and interesting historical sites. This walk is 7.38 km and is easy to moderate. The map/guide we bought earlier from the tourist office in Marvão, and the start is from Portagem near the public swimming pool. The four of us, two adults and two children aged 12 and 14, set off from the 16th century bridge and tower in Portagem. The guide informs you to follow the trail by posts with green markers and we realised after a few kilometres there are none. Instead follow the normal markers of a red and yellow rectangles.

A unique and personal guide to Sintra, Portugal Print E-mail
Holiday Focus Portugal

Where can you find a dinosaur’s footprint, some of Europe’s oldest grapevines and a deep blowhole that echoes the sound of the Atlantic Ocean in the space of a short walk?. The answers are revealed in a fascinating guide to one of the most beautiful and remarkable areas in Europe. The beaches of Sintra in Portugal - only a short trip down the coast from Lisbon - have been a popular destination for British tourists since the Christian crusaders first sailed to the region in 1147, yet most visitors remain completely unaware of the easily-accessable delights of the area.

Dewi a Welsh graphic designer - who fell so in love with the area that he moved his family there more than a decade ago - has used his local knowledge to produce a unique guidebook to Sintra that could turn even the most run-of-the-mill package holiday into a voyage of discovery.

Green Portugal - hiking without the hassle Print E-mail
Holiday Focus Portugal
Wildside Holidays are very happy to welcome a new hiking and local tour outfit going by the name of Green Portugal. Based in the pretty little riverside town of Góis in central Portugal. Set up by Jules Brown and Kate Stephenson, who moved to Portugal in 2004, it aims to provide low-impact short breaks and holidays in a region that’s still largely unknown to most foreign visitors.

Inland, en route to the major mountains, and midway between Lisbon and Porto, central Portugal is off the beaten track but accessible. The nearest city, the old university town of Coimbra, is only 45 minutes away, and both Lisbon and Porto airports are within an easy two-hour drive, but Góis itself hides away in the beautiful Ceira river valley, beneath the Serra do Açor mountain range.

Tipi Algarve, all about "Glamping" and free for kids eco holidays! Print E-mail
Holiday Focus Portugal

"Camping is definately not what it used to be! "Glamping" or "Glamorous Camping" is the luxury way forward and at Tipi Algarve, a small family run business, we pride ourselves that the whole site is an extension of our home where we welcome guests as we would our friends and family. Truly an alternative holiday with a difference."

The Portuguese Algarve has long been a popular destination amongst British holiday makers, partly due to the 3,000+ hours of sunshine enjoyed per year but also because of the stunning beaches and countryside and of course, exceptionally friendly people.  And now, for those wanting the sun and sea but with a difference, look no further than the peaceful eco-retreat of Monte Joao Afonso in the foothills of Monchique. Did we mention that kids go free?
