Autumn is a wonderful time of year to enjoy the stunning countryside scenery in Catalonia, and what better way to discover the area than on foot based at Els Canterers guest house in the small riverside village of Miravet in the Ebro Region. You can follow the GR99 trail along the winding river down to the village of Benifallet. Miravet is in a privilegded location, situated between 2 beautiful Natural Parks; Els Ports and Montsant. Els Ports lies between Catalonia, Valencia and Aragón and is a natural forest area, full of wildlife, such as the Spanish Ibex, Griffon Vulture, Golden Eagle and Peregrine Falcon. Click the read more below for more information and pictures about this beautiful area.

There are numerous marked walking routes throughout the park for you to enjoy, and several villages along the way for you to discover, such as Horta de Sant Joan which was a place of inspiration for Picasso’s earlier paintings and is now home to a Picasso Museum holding replicas of all his collection. Montsant offers spectacular landscape and is known as one of the principal reserves of flora and fauna in the Mediterranean mountains. On route to the mountainous area, you will drive through the wine region of Priorat where you can stop off and visit numerous wine cellars, or visit the 12th Century Carthusian Monastery of Escaladie, the first to have been founded in the Peninsula. If you prefer a lighter stroll to enjoy the birdlife of the area, you can drive up to the Sebes Nature Reserve at Flix and stroll along the marked track, stopping off at the observation huts along the way before reaching the nesting area of the White Stork – a project which has been underway since 2003 to re-introduce the stork into the area around the Ebro.
The surrounding area offers a diverse selection of landscape; from the mountains of Priorat, the winding River Ebro, the flatlands of the Ebro Delta where rice is cultivated, and the coastal towns which are only a 30 minute drive away; and are a great place for strolling along the promenade in the autumn months.
Miravet also celebrates it’s Autumn festival at the beginning of October, with processions, music, dancing, and the traditional sardine breakfast for all the locals and visitors, where they offer sardines cooked over an open fire in the plaza, served with Catalan bread!
