Bear’s breech (Acanthus mollis) flower

English name: Bear’s breech
Spanish name: Acanto
Scientific name: Acanthus mollis (Linnaeus)

This plant with its distinctive leaves can often cover large areas, mostly in the shade. The leaves grow strongly after the autumn rains with a tall flower spike emerging late spring. The unusual flowers surrounds this tall spike, each is protected by sharp spines on the lower bract. The upper bract is purple in colour and the flower hidden within is white with purple veins and 35 to 50mm long. During the late summer large, hard seeds are ejected, helping to expand the coverage after the leaves die back.
