Full Description:

The Two Main Seasons Concerning Bird Migration

Spring...The bulk of the spring migration takes place from March until May when literally millions of passerines, raptors, storks and other migrants cross over the Strait of Gibraltar.

The Strait of Gibraltar physically starts on the Atlantic Ocean, from Cape Trafalgar on the Spanish mainland, to Cape Espartel in Morocco. This is the widest point of the channel at some 25kms. Progressing eastwards, the Strait narrows dramatically to only 12kms across at Tarifa, just around the corner from the rock of Gibraltar.

This entire stretch of coastline is the obvious crossing point for many birds and a great place to watch the action.

The spring migration is spread over many months from the beginning of each year, and offers superb opportunities to bird watch a multitude of diverse species that breed on the Iberian peninsular, or continue their journey northwards to other countries in northern Europe.

Birdwatching in the south of Spain is stunning but the region of southern Andalucia is the number one area to come birding.

Autumn...To see the mass movement of of migratory birds of prey in late summer and early autumn, is without doubt one of the most visually stunning experiences anyone remotely interested in birds or nature can have.

Our accommodation, Hoopoe Cottage was really built out of necessity! We had become so attractive, living in Andalucia and our families and friends were constantly arriving... So we built the Cottage which is now also available to others.

Hoopoe Cottage is a self catering, open-plan house in our garden. It sleeps two adults and two children (max) and is equipped with cooker, fridge, TV DVD and Stereo. Internet with computer. Two terraces (sun/shade)

We give a 10% discount to Hoopoe Cottage clients that book a birding or wildlife day tour with Andalucian guides.
