Iberian lynx and brown bear, Spain

Due to Spain’s geographical location, its climate is extremely diverse, and it is home to an impressive range of animals including birds of prey, wild cats and boar, wolves and sea mammals. Two animals that have long been associated with Spain, but are both, sadly, facing extinction, are the indigenous Iberian Lynx and the brown bear. Despite their declining numbers it is still possible to see them; the famous Doñana National Park in Andalusia is the place to go in search of the Lynx, while the brown bear can be found in the Cantabrian Mountains of Northern Spain.

Amphibians and reptiles, Portugal

With 50,000 hectares of protected areas, including the famous Serra da Arrábida Natural Park and the wetlands of the Sado and Tagus rivers, you’re sure to be enthralled by the diverse wildlife and rich ecological heritage in Portugal. The Sado estuary, just south of Lisbon, is teeming with all manner of amphibians, reptiles and animals. From the Spanish terrapin to red-tailed spiny-footed lizards, west Iberian painted frogs and the Montpellier snake, there’s an abundance of reptilian life thriving, as well as otters, bats, polecats and dolphins to name but a few. It's also one of the best bird-watching spots in Portugal.

Kangaroos and crocs, Australia

Due to its climate and island status, Australia is home to some very unusual animals that you won’t find anywhere else. Although most of Australia is semi-arid or desert, it has diverse terrain, from alpine ranges to tropical rainforests, and it is recognised as a megadiverse country. Australia has the greatest number of reptiles of any country, with 755 species, including freshwater and seawater crocodiles. Australia is also famous for its marsupials including the kangaroo, koala, and wombat, and birds such as the emu and the kookaburra. Although Australia can be expensive to reach, with all the incredible wildlife on offer it can make for the trip of a lifetime to experience.
